Privacy Policy

Yorkshire Adventure is a free treasure-hunt game you play in your web browser, built by Jamie Munro. This page explains what happens to your information when you visit the website (yorkshire-adventure.co.uk) and play the game. It is written to be read, not to hide behind jargon — if anything here is unclear, please get in touch.

The short version

  • There is no sign-up and no account. We do not ask you for your name, email, or any personal details to play.
  • The game uses your device's location to show where you are on the map — but your location stays on your device and is never sent to us or anyone else.
  • We use privacy-friendly analytics that count anonymous activity. They set no cookies and do not identify you, so there is no cookie banner to click.
  • A few things (your progress, your sound preference) are saved on your own device so you can pick up where you left off.

Your location

The game asks your browser for your location so it can show your position on the map and tell you how close you are to the next spot on the trail. This is handled entirely by your browser, on your device — your location is used to draw the map in front of you and is never transmitted to us, to a server, or to any third party. If you decline the location permission, or turn it off later in your browser settings, the game won't be able to show your position on the map or help you navigate the trail, so you won't be able to play.

Information saved on your device

To make the game work, a small amount of information is saved in your browser's local storage, on your device: your progress along a trail (so you can resume), and your sound on/off preference. This information stays on your device, is not personal data, and is never sent to us. You can remove it at any time by clearing your browser's site data for this website.

Analytics

We want to understand roughly how the game is used — for example how many people visit, and how often the in-game charity prompt is shown or clicked — so we can improve it. We use two privacy-friendly analytics services for this:

  • Vercel Web Analytics — anonymous page-view counts. It is cookieless and does not track you across websites (privacy policy).
  • Umami — anonymous counts of a few in-game actions (such as whether the charity prompt was shown, skipped, or clicked). It is cookieless, stores no personal data, does not identify individual visitors, and its data is held in the European Union (privacy policy).

Because neither service stores cookies or any information that identifies you on your device, no cookie-consent banner is required.

This website does not use cookies.

Third-party services

Delivering the website and running the game involves a few other companies. As with any website, those that serve the site to you necessarily receive standard technical information — such as your IP address and browser type — in order to respond to the request, and may keep it briefly in server logs.

  • Vercel — hosts the website and provides the page-view analytics above (privacy policy).
  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) — stores and serves the trail data and map tiles from servers in the EU (privacy policy).
  • Umami — the analytics service described above.
  • Google Forms — the optional "Provide feedback" button opens a Google Form. If you choose to fill it in, anything you enter is handled by Google (privacy policy).

The game also links out to other sites you can choose to visit — local charity donation pages, Buy Me a Coffee, and TripAdvisor. These open in a new tab and are covered by their own privacy policies; we don't pass any of your information to them, you simply navigate there.

Where the game links to a site we don't operate (the charities, TripAdvisor, Buy Me a Coffee, the feedback form), we have no control over that site's content or privacy practices, and we'd encourage you to read their own privacy policies. These links open in a new tab, so your game stays open where you left it.

Children's privacy

Yorkshire Adventure is designed to be enjoyed by families, including children. There is no account to create and no sign-up, and the game does not ask anyone — child or adult — for personal information. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone, and location stays on the player's own device. If you are a parent or guardian and have any questions about how the game handles data, please contact us using the details below.

Security

Because we do not collect or store personal information about you, there is very little about you for us to secure. Information necessarily handled by the providers above (such as your IP address when the site is delivered to you) is subject to their own security measures. No method of transmitting or storing data over the internet is ever completely secure, so while we keep the site simple and privacy-preserving by design, we can't guarantee absolute security.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time — for example if we add or change a service. When we do, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page, so it's worth glancing at occasionally.
